This position will be embedded within the Diplomacy Team due to the strategic
nature of the projects, which involve engaging with governments, regional
organizations, and international forums. At the same time, the role will require close
collaboration with the Implementation Strategies Team, reflecting the emphasis on
designing and delivering actionable climate solutions for the Pacific region. Given the
interdisciplinary nature of adaptation work, the position will also work closely with the
Science Team, particularly the Adaptation and Loss and Damage Science Group and the Socio-Economic Impacts Group, to ensure that science-based evidence informs the development and implementation of innovative strategies. This cross-team
collaboration is integral to achieving Climate Analytics’ mission and maximizing impact
in the region.
The position is remote with a strong preference for locations in the Caribbean.
Key responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of Climate Diplomacy, and in close collaboration with the global Climate Diplomacy Team, the Senior Policy Expert’s key responsibilities will include:
- Bringing in-depth policy knowledge and expertise on Adaptation and Loss and Damage and an understanding of negotiations on Loss and Damage under the UNFCCC/Paris Agreement and developments in related fora including the Loss and Damage Fund Board.
- Contributing to desktop assessment of available L&D projection methods
- Undertaking reviews of existing policies and working with partners and stakeholders to enhance these.
- Providing technical advice on adaptation and loss and damage work being undertaken by Climate Analytics, including under the Building Our Loss and Damage Response (BOLD) Project
- Supporting the development and delivery of small-scale pilot projects to trial responses to loss and damage, including NELD
- Contributing to the desktop research on historical experience of economic and non-economic loss and damage in the Pacific Island countries.
- Support the development of adaptation plans, climate change risk assessment approaches and the translation of adaptation needs into policies and plans.
- Developing and maintaining a detailed understanding of adaptation and loss and damage climate policy in small island developing states.
- Complementing policy expertise from Research Analysts in Climate Analytics Berlin.
- Regional anchorage of expertise, ideally having standing experience in regional policy-making related to Adaptation and Loss and Damage in the Caribbean.
- Support future project formulation, including the development of concept notes to enhance access to climate finance.
