Permanent employee, Full-time · Berlin HQ
5,050 - 7,326 € per month
Job description
We are currently seeking a new Senior Expert (or Professional*) for our Climate Policy Team based in Berlin. You will lead our work analysing global pathways aligned with the Paris Agreement’s long-term temperature goal and assessing the implications of these global pathways for different sectors and countries. This role bridges quantitative and qualitative policy analysis and includes developing tools and methods for tracking climate mitigation action and providing scientific assessments of fossil-fuel phase-out and zero carbon scale-up requirements in Paris Agreement compatible pathways. It also includes providing evidence-based analysis of different mitigation options and their benefits and potential trade-offs. Furthermore, you will line manage a small number of staff and actively contribute to and lead on the development and acquisition of new projects.

Your responsibilities
  • You develop new and maintain existing analytical pipelines to assess the results of integrated assessment models (IAMs), including the analysis of pathway ensembles.
  • Using these pathways and other lines of evidence, you help develop and communicate global and national benchmarks for sector decarbonization in line with the Paris Agreement’s long term temperature goal.
  • You work in partnerships with IAM modelling groups to further develop scenario protocols and improve the representation of mitigation options in models, for example focusing on hard-to-abate sectors and new technologies to accelerate a fossil phaseout.
  • You coordinate with project partners and relevant stakeholders – both internally and externally and maintain relationships with collaborators.
  • You ensure scientific integrity of your work and the work of others.
  • You contribute to scientific articles on the topic.
  • You represent Climate Analytics and project teams in meetings and conferences and disseminate project results.
  • You line manage up to five staff members.
  • You contribute to and lead the development and acquisition of new projects.
Your profile
You will ideally have the following qualifications and skills:
  • Hold a relevant PhD/DPhil with post-qualification research experience.
  • Knowledge of integrated assessment models and modelling of deep mitigation pathways at the global/regional/national level.
  • Specific sectoral expertise, knowledge of land-use modelling or knowledge of temperature assessment methodologies is an added advantage.
  • A minimum of 8 (or 5*) years of relevant work experience with energy- and land-use mitigation scenarios.
  • Experience in project management and coordination and managing teams.
  • Proven and strong programming skills in Python.
  • Experience in working in collaborative coding environments with multiple team members using version control (git) and unit testing.
  • An interest in understanding and addressing climate change mitigation at national to international levels, and in working for impact.
  • Excellent English writing and verbal skills.
  • A well-developed sense for teamwork and ability to interact with a diverse array of people.
Our offer
  • A job with purpose. With us you will work in a team of highly engaged people and with your skills you can make a positive contribution to our work in the field of climate change.

  • We are working in a positive and inspiring working atmosphere with an international team.
  • Our Berlin office is located near Moritz Platz in the heart of the lively Kreuzberg, surrounded by a dynamic startup scene.
  • For the time being, we can offer a two year contract. There is a prospect of extension, and we are interested in long-term cooperation.
